Pupil 1971 -1977

Wow!. Didn’t realise my High School went back that far.

I can honestly say the six years I spent at the Academy were the best days of my life.

Now that I’m old and grey (64 ) I look back perhaps more than I used to. I have nothing but happy memories except for that day I was framed and got two of the best from a Mr. Wilson, a Tech Drawing teacher. I hated that subject from that day on.

The teachers I remember I fondly and who had an influence in my life were from various subjects. Not just the subjects I enjoyed.

French, Mrs. Harkness . I was rotten at it but I liked that lady’s style. I think I had my 1st crush on her but let’s not go there.

Maths. Geordie Allan. Great guy. About 6ft 3 . Handsome and not to be trifled with. He was also coach to the Seniors football team so I needed to keep in his good books to get picked.

History. My favourite subject, I ended up with a History and English degree. To this day I read a lot about world History. The man responsible for that was Mr, Hutchison . He made it real. I was captivated by him . Great Teacher. Thank you, Sir.

PE. Like my big brother Jim Scott, I loved Sport. There were some scary teachers in the PE Dept. Paw Brown was one but the scariest was without doubt Johnny Watson. He was a bit of a bully. He never picked on me but I used to feel sorry for the boys he did pick on. If they weren’t athletic or coordinated, he could make those four periods a week a nightmare. I remember boys had to go topless in PE. I hated that. I was a little belfry in my 1st year. I was also terrified of jumping over the Horse. A ‘Flying Angel’ they called it. I just never trusted the poor wee fellow who was on the other side waiting to catch me. I always thought I was going to flatten him.

I was into football and volleyball. For some reason I was always picked to be team Captain. What happened to those leadership skills?

I loved playing for the school. Saturday morning on the ‘Big Grass’. (it was like playing footy in the Trenches ) Or on the Ash pitch. Mitre Mouldmaster hitting you from close range would sting on a frosty winter morning.

Teacher and Coach - Mr. Duncan.

That’s me front row 4th from left.

Mr Steele (Science teacher) was my volleyball coach. Again good guy.

School dances at Christmas held in Airdrie Town Hall were memorable. Taking an unauthorised loan of my big brothers trendy 70’s attire was risky but worth it to impress the girls.

I could go on and on, but I shall spare you.

Wonder how my schoolmate’s lives have turned out?
